  • 19/06/08 Ignore that bit about a release called ‘Chosen’ below. The release will now be the full recording of the Triptych show and will be called ‘I Can Hear The Sirens Call’, in a nice dvd box with full art and sleevenotes by me about the conception of the project. Out in the Autumn maybe?
  • 09/04/08 Releases wise: The Dark Is Rising cd-r and 12″, with remix from 2562, out in 2 months. Ablaze at Noon cd out on Highpoint Lowlife, late summeror later. Saffron/Noro split 12″ with Konx-Om-Pax, on Highpoint Lowlife, out Autumn. A track on one of the first 12″s on new London label Balkan Vinyl. And lastly, and soonest, Chosen, a new self-released 3″, based on Takashi Miike’s ‘MPD Psycho’.
08/04/08 Did a mix for excellent web radio show Electronic Explorations. Its linked to in the Mixes section below.
25/02/08 Not doing too well at updating this am I? Added today, more mixes from the podcast series. Also, new 20 min long TVO piece ‘The King Of All Tears’, previously released on a limited cd-r, will be taking up one side of the upcoming ‘Magnetism, That Electricity’ double 12″ on Highpoint Lowlife, alongside three brand new Marcia tracks. Theres two more new releases on the cards two…a surprise new album on HPLL in the summer sometime, and a new limited 3″ cdr self released, out in April.
Album launch party for ‘The Dark Is Rising’ is in a month…I guess it might be out about then?

  • 30/09/07 Nice to hear some radio play for the pretty much non radio friendly Rose and Sandy stuff…Mary Anne Hobbes dropped ‘Map One’ on her Experimental show on Radio 1 on Thursday night. Nice one.
In other news i’ve just finished two remixes for Scottish drone/ambient musician Erstlaub to be released as a web companion release to his forthcoming Highpoint Lowlife cd release.

  • 26/09/07 Live noise/drone improv between myself and Dutch musician Orphax now in the downloads section
  • 15/09/07 test of an mp3 player im trying to add

  • 08/09/07 Link added to my newest Stuff Records podcast, featuring tracks from the new album. Check Downloads. Also been busy out and about, hopefully i’ll have a recording of the improvised drone/noise set i did with Dutch musician Orphax up in the next few days.
Just waiting to sort out a remixer for the Stuff 12″ and then i’ll post full details of the release.

  • 26/06/07 Couple new mixes discovered and uploaded to the server, check the downloads section.
  • 6/05/07 Site updated fully. New version of Broken Looper added. Check the Forthcoming section in the Discog section for new releases on the scene.

  • To run all plugins on this site (pc only at the moment) youll need to install the Pluggo runtime - its here http://www.cycling74.com/download/pluggoruntime361.zip (WinXP) . Then simply copy the .dll file that you get from here to your vst plugins directory.

  • BrokenLooper is a simple pseudo-granular buffer looper. record input or load a file, it takes 1000 ms of this and buffers it.
Then you can play it back - whack the volume up and hit play. You can randomise or oscillate the position (use the Width parameter to widen the window when oscillating).
In the latest version theres a Stereo Magic option which adds a slight delay between the left and right channels to give a slight pulsing/chorus effect.
Theres also a Pitch Sequencer. Get the Playback Speed to the pitch you want, click and drag the Save number to the position you want to save to and release to save. Then horizontally drag the sequence numbers to adjust the pitch for each position. Choose between synching to Beats or Bars (synching should work in all hosts, mail ruaridh@marciablaine.com with bug info or whatever though)
    Get it here -

  • Heres the original textura.org review
  • The Milk Factory rated the same album 11th best of the year.

  • Uk Rock magazine ‘Rock Sound‘ said this…

“Should Ridley Scott ever wish to rework his visionary sci-fi picture, Blade Runner, he need look no further than Glasgow-based Ruardih Law to score the flight of his cameras over futuristic skylines. As the Village Orchestra, Law has crafted a debut varied in hue and texturally rich, where sound transcends invisible waves to send one spiralling into their imagination’s deepest recesses. It’s perfect silver screen fodder, it’s glitch-afflicted tangents a thoroughly modern update on Vangelis, et al. Technically accomplished but absolutely organic in its song-to-song sequencing. ‘Et in Arcadia Ego’ is a triumph of bedroom experimentation over big-budget orchestration, and the wonderful melancholy of ‘Many Rooms In My Fathers House’ and ‘Sunken’ is worthy of any directors investigation, immediately. Cue the final fade: the credits scroll, the audience leave, their dumbfounded silence defeaning: Law should afford himself a deserved bow.” 8/10

  • Here’s one from UK hiphop magazine (??) Undercover
    Et In Arcadia Ego
    (Highpoint Lowlife Records)
    9/10
“While a certain Scottish duo has been stealing the headlines in the electronica sections of all the most knowledgeable publications, fellow Scot Ruaridh Law, in his Village Orchestra guise, has released one of the albums of the year. As Boards Of Canada have moved towards a more pastoral sound, it is refreshing to hear that Law’s bucolic offering remains firmly anchored in electronica. One of the key aspects to the success of Et In Arcadia Ego is the sheer scale of the sound. Where too many electronic artists are afraid to fill the space between their listener’s ears, Law is keen to pack it full. Law is at his best when creating an all-immersing whirligig of electronic sound, as in the truly remarkable Jacob/Bad Hand At Cards v2, a glorious electronic carousel with a curious melody at its epicentre that sounds remarkably like a snippet of Wicked Game by Chris Isaac - but in a good way. Put together with some crashing beats and marvellous chopped up vocals, it is a thing of intense beauty. It’s difficult to pick out the best tracks, as there is something great in each one. However, it is impossible to ignore the magnificent, jubilant All The Little Lights Going Out, which has everything from strings, a gloriously uplifting beat and a plaintive vocal hidden far away to a myriad of gentle cracks, whistles and twinkles. In short, if this doesn’t make you feel good, then nothing will. It must be tiresome indeed for any electronica act coming out of Scotland to be constantly compared to Boards Of Canada. With such a strong scene developing north of the border, it is time that other artists came out from beneath their shadow. Awesome - and a sign of great things to come.”
